Bio

Clare Bayley’s translation of George Sand’s unperformed play GABRIEL opened in May 2022 as part of Oxford Playhouse Plays Out summer season. Other plays include AFTER THE PEACE (longlisted for the Bruntwood Prize 2019, RADA Festival 2017), ON THE MARCH (Oxford Playhouse 2018) FAMILY TREES (readings at Bolton Octagon 2019 and Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough), PIXEL DUST (Assembly Roxy Upstairs, 2017), THE ENCHANTMENT (National Theatre, London 2007) and THE CONTAINER (Fringe First and Amnesty International Freedom of Expression Award 2007).

Clare also writes for radio. Her Saturday drama SNARES was broadcast on BBC Radio 4 in October 2024. Other plays for the BBC include IN THE VAN, THE SECRET PLACE, PORTOBELLO BEACH, THE BRINGER OF SWEETS.

Clare runs the Oxford Playhouse writers’ scheme, Playhouse Playmakers. She is co-author with Fraser Grace of Playwriting: A Writer’s and Artist’s Companion (Bloomsbury 2015). She is joint course director on the MSt in Writing for Performance at the University of Cambridge Institute of Continuing Education. She also teaches at Central School of Speech and Drama and New York University/Tisch School of Performing Arts.
