Kirsty Smith

BAFTA Rocliffe TV Drama winner Kirsty Smith is a Playwright and Screenwriter from Keighley, West Yorkshire; she has been part of BBC Drama Writersroom 2021, WFTV Mentoring Scheme North 2024 and The Royal Court & Leeds Playhouse Playwriting Schemes. 

Kirsty writes for screen with Lucy Dwyer, mentored by Chris Chibnall on the Dancing Ledge Writers Scheme they have original TV projects and features in development with BBC Drama, Saffron Cherry, Studio Crook, Factual Fiction and RED Productions. They love collaborating, are experienced adapting IP and are keen to be part of writers rooms.

Kirsty and Lucy have developed drama series for BBC One through BBC Drama North. AN OCCUPATION was adapted from IP while WE LOVE TELLY is based on their experiences working on late night TV prank shows in the noughties. They were hired to write comedy feature SUPER G’S for Lunar Lander Films which was shortlisted for BFI iFeatures, while mystery series ARE YOU HAPPY? was adapted from IP for Lime Pictures and The Agatha Christie Estate.

Original series THE LEGEND OF THE HACIENDA DJ BOOTH is in development with Studio Crook based on a (mostly) true story. Mystery drama DIRTY WORK is in development with Saffron Cherry; think Agatha Christie meets Rita, Sue and Bob Too. They are also developing a project about Page Three set in the 1980’s with Factual Fiction and former MP Clare Short. Their scripts have been finalists in All3 Media’s New Comedy Script Award, Funny Women Comedy Writing Award, BFI iFeatures Scheme and Sid Gentle’s Thousand Films.

Kirsty writes Podcasts for Wondery TERRIBLY FAMOUS for Loftus Media and LEGACY for Goalhanger, her radio play SIDELINED was produced by Jessica Mitic for BBC Radio 4. 

For theatre JANE HAIR (Bronte Society) was co-written with Kat Martin; HOW TO HAVE A BABY & NOT LOSE YOUR SH*T (Kings Head Theatre) was directed by Lucy Speed (Unforgotten, After Life, Eastenders) with Mark Ravenhill as Dramaturg it was adapted from her book published by Bennion Kearney. She is currently developing THIS GIRL DID about the boom in ladies cricket in 1930s Yorkshire.

Previously she worked as a TV Producer in comedy and magic for Objective Productions, Hat Trick, Tiger Aspect, Channel X and Radar/ Mad Monk TV making shows for BBC2, BBC3, Channel 4, E4, ITV, C5, SKY and MTV. As Head Of Programming for Diagonal View, global leaders in online content she created online channels that have been viewed by billions.
