Bio
Paul is Artistic Director of the Stephen Joseph Theatre where he has directed Whitby Rebels, Dracula - The Bloody Truth, Beauty and the Beast (UK Theatre Award winner), Constellations, The Comedy of Errors, Brief Encounter, The Offing, The Snow Queen, Stepping Out, Alice in Wonderland, Build a Rocket (Holden Street Theatres Award), The 39 Steps, A (Scarborough) Christmas Carol, Goth Weekend, Pinocchio and The Rise and Fall of Little Voice.
He trained as a director at The Bristol Old Vic Theatre School then won a directing bursary to the Manchester Royal Exchange. He was selected to attend the National Theatre's Advanced Directors' Course and was Staff Director at the NT for three years.
Paul ran Theatre503 from 2012 to 2016, introducing the Trafalgar Transfer season and the Theatre503 International Playwriting Award. He has been twice nominated for Best Artistic Director at the Off West End Awards. His productions of And Then Come the Nightjars, A Handful of Stars and Land of Our Fathers earned a total of 12 Off West End Award nominations, including Best Director. Other credits include the acclaimed My Mother Said I Never Should at The Other Palace Theatre (starring Maureen Lipman), Honour at The Park Theatre (starring Henry Goodman and Imogen Stubbs), Breakfast with Mugabe (Bath Theatre Royal) and The Swallowing Dark (Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse – TMA Award winner).
His first feature length film, And Then Come the Nightjars (Finite Films), was voted one of Rolling Stone’s top films of 2023.
